Kutumb begins by building long-term relationships within local villages around Varanasi. This work is grounded in trust, listening, and understanding what already exists in the community. Sewing groups grow out of these relationships, shaped by local knowledge and shared goals.

From within each community, Kutumb works alongside women leaders who guide sewing groups and support others to build skills. The program is seeded with sewing machines, and local women are trained to teach and lead within their own groups, ensuring knowledge, leadership, and confidence stay in the community.

Kutumb recognises education as a powerful foundation for opportunity, confidence, and long-term wellbeing. For many families in surrounding villages, ongoing access to education can be limited by financial and structural barriers. The scholarship program exists to reduce those barriers and support children and young people to stay engaged in learning.

Through the scholarship program, Kutumb supports 150 students with the practical costs of education, including tuition fees, textbooks, uniforms, and additional coaching where needed. This support helps ensure that financial pressure does not stand in the way of attending school or continuing studies. Kutumb works closely with students and families, recognising that education is most sustainable when it is supported at home as well as at school.

The scholarship program takes a holistic approach to education, recognising that learning extends beyond the classroom. Alongside career guidance and counselling to support informed decision-making about future pathways, students have opportunities to engage in Kutumb’s arts program including dancing, singing, acting, and music. Educational activities and guest talks from field experts further support confidence, self-expression, and a sense of possibility, helping young people develop skills that extend well beyond academic achievement.
